St. Cecelia: Middle School Students and College Preparation

As a parent or guardian, you undoubtedly understand the importance of education in your child’s life. You may understand that a child’s high school performance can determine their college admission and acceptance rates, but were you aware that your child’s academic performance in middle school shapes their high school and college study skills? In this blog, St. Cecelia Interparochial Catholic School offers a few tips that your child can implement into their studying and school routines that will promote academic success.

Plan Ahead

To ensure that your child understands just how important high school and college are, make sure that you explain to them what college means to you. Sit down with your child and talk to them about what careers they are interested in. For example, if they might want to become a doctor or nurse, look at medical schools in the area. Make sure they are passionate about the career they are interested in. If they are interested, they will be more motivated to learn more. Encourage your child to talk with professionals who are in that job field. If you have a friend or family member who is in the medical field, see if your middle school student can shadow them for a day at their work. Make sure that you have some sort of financial plan set into place. Whether you are educating yourself and your child about student loans or a helping them to set money aside in a savings account, make sure that you have some sort of plan.

If your child is working hard, they should play hard. Provide them with time set aside for family and friends. Remember that it is is a great idea for your child to get involved in extracurricular activities like sports, clubs, music, or art. Encourage your child’s outside of school passions.
