There are a lot of phrases and buzzwords that are associated with good schooling in the United States. There are gold star schools and blue-ribbon schools, all of which are ways that states evaluate their schools and determine which ones are the best. Schools want to be recognized for a number of different reasons, but for parents, these titles and recognitions can help you decide what school you want your child at.
Another one of these titles is an IB School. This title isn’t one of recognition, but one of purpose. IB schools are committed to challenging their students in their studies and pushing for academic excellence. Here are some things to know about IB Schools, provided by St. Cecelia School.

IB stands for International Baccalaureate and it is an educational organization that has been around for 50 years. It began in Geneva, Switzerland with the mission to “create a better world through education.” In 2014, St. Cecelia School became an IB World School, which means that our curriculum and educational philosophy run largely through International Baccalaureate and their standards.
International Baccalaureate offers four programs that “focus on teaching students to think critically and independently,” and St. Cecelia School is proud to call itself an IB School.
As noted, St. Cecelia School became an IB World School back in 2014, which shifted our philosophy. One major focus of International Baccalaureate is character. We think that character is just as important as academics, which is a mission and philosophy shared by IB Schools across the country and around the world.
In 2016, St. Cecelia School became a candidate for the Primary Years Programme, which is the most comprehensive program offered by International Baccalaureate. This program focuses on students from 3-12 years old and focuses on the development of the whole child, not just their academic performance. This program incorporates a framework that rests on these five essential elements: knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action.
